Sustainability

The Langlands are committed to honouring the Tiaki Promise:

The Tiaki Promise is a commitment to care for New Zealand, for now, and for future generations.
By following the Tiaki Promise, we are making a commitment to act as a guardian, protecting and preserving our home. By incorporating small steps we can help make a big difference.

Natural and non-toxic chemical free cleaning is used in all areas of the hotel to protect the environment, our guests and team.

We are using refillable dispensers which are NZ made and fully recyclable for our bathroom amenities.

28667 plastic bottles saved from landfill by being manufactured into our luxurious bedding and pillows by Vendella.

Recycling bins are installed in guest rooms and for hotel use for recycling of all paper, cardboard, and glass. Nespresso coffee machine pods are recycled through the TerraCycle program. We monitor our waste with the focus on increasing recyclable and reusable and decreasing general waste. All takeaway coffee cups are fully compostable.

Food wastage and coffee grounds are part of a local compost program

Water stations are available for guests and staff to refill their receptacles.

20,000+ plastic bottles are saved from landfill per year by using locally sourced milk that is delivered fresh in returnable bulk plastic kegs. This is used in the café and for in-room milk supply

Our Brew’d coffee beans are sourced from Mint Roastery, just down the road. The beans are delivered in reusable metal buckets, which reduces wastage.

An EV charger is available for guests in the carpark for charging their electric vehicles.

We have specified our uniform supplier provide clothing that is locally sourced and is environmentally friendly by using recyclable products and no plastic packaging or plastic used in production of the clothing.

The construction phase of the hotel included the importance of reserving what could be salvaged. Meld restaurant and Niche Bar brickwork is from repurposed bricks and staircase made from timber from the building that stood here before The Langlands.

The hotel guest compendiums are electronic and by incorporating recycled Rimu as signage in our bathrooms reduces the use of paper or plastic.

We endeavour to support New Zealand made producers and suppliers, to reduce our carbon footprint and contribute to the local economy.

ILT has a market garden that supplies The Langlands and our sister properties with herbs, garnish and produce. The Langlands has installed a flower wall to grow flower to be used for cocktail garnish. This reduces produce purchased in plastic containers.

Food and Beverage, Duty Managers and Porters use electronic tablets to complete all checklists reducing daily printing.

Food and Beverage team dehydrate fruit to use as garnish to eliminate waste of product.

We have chosen to install electricity as a main energy source, instead of a coal fuelled boiler or other system, to minimise our carbon footprint.

The hotel has energy efficient LED lighting, which lasts longer, is more durable, and offers better light quality than other types of lighting. All public area lighting is on sensors which reduces energy consumption when the spaces are not in use.

All accommodation rooms have Go Green service options which reduce the number of cleans per stay and limit the turnover of linen.

In room prints by local artist Trudy Burdon, which expresses Māori heritage. Whanaungatanga II is about being open to listening, learning and understanding each other and Whakarongo II is about working together, supporting one another, and providing people with a sense of belonging.

Service IQ is offered to team members for practical on-the-job industry training. It provides career opportunities and upskilling which benefits our wider team https://www.serviceiq.org.nz/

Supporting Murihiku's Environment - ILT

ILT is proud to be a long-standing supporter of environmental and conservation initiatives across Murihiku/Southland. As a community organisation, the profits from our businesses go directly into local projects that protect and enhance our region.

Our unique business model means every time you stay at one of ILT’s accommodation properties, you’re helping fund regional initiatives. In the past year alone, we returned nearly $8.9 million to our community, supporting a range of worthwhile projects.

Here are a few environmental initiatives we’ve supported:

  • Recycle South: Recycle South combines recycling operations with inclusive employment opportunities for people with disabilities. Their core business is collecting, processing, and selling recyclable materials, which supports Southland’s kerbside recycling service.
  • Deer to Care:  A group that donates high quality free range wild game to local charities that distribute the meat to those in need. They help maintain healthy native ecosystems and biodiversity by managing Deer numbers and helping with food insecurity.
  • Mauri Ora Kākāpō Trust: Supporting operating costs for the Kākāpō Recovery Programme in Invercargill.
  • Environment Southland Community Awards: Since 2007, we’ve celebrated local legends leading environmental action and biodiversity. This award recognises the dedication of individuals and groups who work tirelessly to protect and enhance our environment.
  • Kiwi Harvest: Redistributes excess food to those in need and reduces the harmful impact of food waste on our environment; helping to create lasting positive social change by nourishing those in need.
  • Bush Haven Native Bird Rehabilitation Trust: A volunteer-run centre helping injured native birds, like kererū, tui, bellbirds, moreporks, owls, kaka, and kakariki, get back to the wild.

Our Sustainability Journey

As a group, we’re continually improving, converting hotels to cleaner energy, installing solar panels, and supporting EV travel. Our commitment to sustainability is not just about isolated projects, but reflects a continuous journey of improvement and innovation.
